Pune: After birthday bash at police station, Inspector tests positive for COVID-19

Pune: A senior police inspector from a police station in the western part of the city has tested positive for COVID-19 after his birthday was celebrated at the police station by his colleagues and 'who's who' from the locality. The concerned officer's junior inspector is also under treatment for COVID-19, so as a result, there is no senior officer left at the police station to look over the crucial work in its jurisdiction.

The concerned officer took charge of this police station in July month. He had his birthday on Wednesday. The other police personnel and dignitaries from the area and citizens forgot social distancing and lockdown norms and came to meet and greet the inspector at the police station.

Several photos, videos of this birthday celebration were posted on social media which later became viral. However, two days later, the COVID-19 test report of the inspector came as positive and health officials made a list of persons who had come in close contact with him. Now, as per the protocol, police are tracing these persons and asking them to get tested for COVID-19.

The Inspector (Crime), second-in-command officer of the police station had tested COVID-19 positive a month ago and had recovered recently. As soon as he was discharged, his relatives were found to be COVID-19 infected and subsequently, his test also came positive for the second time. Therefore, he is again admitted for treatment.

Meanwhile, senior inspectors from the newly formed neighbouring police station have also contracted COVID-19 and have been undergoing treatment at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital since Saturday (August 29). Therefore, the Commissionerate of Police will now have to appoint temporary officers for both the police stations.

Pournima Gaikwad, Deputy Commissioner Police said, "Both the senior officers of this police station are COVID-19 infected. An assistant inspector has been asked to look after their work on a temporary basis. The process of appointing another senior inspector to the post is underway."
