Pune: Rural police crime branch has nabbed the third absconding suspect Devgan Ajinath Chavan (25), out of the five who had managed to escape from the temporary jail at Yerawada on the night of July 16. Devgan had shaved his head and beard to change his facial identity to mislead police and was hiding in a farm, but police managed to identify him after an extensive surveillance operation.

Police Inspector Padmakar Ghanvat said, “Out of five, three suspects had walked their way along the railway track, a 78 kilometres stretch between Pune Railway station and Daund. Devgan had escaped from this point and had reached Shrigonda taluka in Nagar district. He was staying in a farm at Rakshwadi road but had changed his facial identity. We had received a tip-off about his location and laid a trap to nab him. Initially we could not recognize him as he had shaved his head and beard, so we kept a watch on him for a long time. Policemen in civil dress were deployed and later after confirming his identity the suspect was nabbed.”

Earlier, in a coordinated effort between Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad and Pune Rural police, two of the absconding Yerawada jail inmates were nabbed from Daund and Thergaon area of Pune district. Ganesh Ajinath Chavan, a resident of Borawake Nagar in Gopalwadi of Daund taluka was arrested by Pune Rual police on July 17 and Sunny Tiral Pinto (25), resident of Pansare Colony in Padwalnagar at Thergaon was nabbed on July 18 by Wakad police team of Pimpri-Chinchwad commissionerate. Ganesh and Devgan Ajinath Chavan along with Akshay Kondkya Chavan had walked along the railway track on Wednesday night. Akshay and Devgan Chavan parted their ways before Mergalwadi, where Ganesh was nabbed.

The five inmates – Devgan, Ganesh, Akshay Chavan along with Ajinkya Kamble and Sunny Tyran Pinto – had escaped by bending window grills of a room in the government hostel, which has been designated a temporary prison due to the Covid-19 pandemic and houses close to 600 inmates, at Yerawada. The incident took place on the night of July 16. They were lodged in the jail after being arrested on charges of dacoity and murder, registered at Daund and Lonikand police stations in Pune Rural police jurisdiction and one at Wakad police station in Pimpri Chinchwad police jurisdiction.
