Pune: With 50 per cent judicial staff, district court to resume work from Monday

Pune: The Shivajinagar District and Sessions Court will resume work on Monday (June 8). The court will be functional with only 50 per cent of judicial officers and employees.

Priority will be given to hearing and deciding cases in which arguments from both - complainant and accused - side have been completed and the case is in the last stage of judgement to be delivered by the court. This will bring relief to many litigants who are awaiting justice.

Milind Pawar, former President of Pune Bar Association said, "Many cases were in the last stage of hearing when the lockdown was announced. In many cases, the accused might be acquitted but is still languishing in the jail due to delay in pronouncing judgment by the courts. Even if someone is convicted of any crime, he or she will have an option to challenge the order in higher courts. Such litigants will benefit from the limited resumption of judicial services."

"In a case which I am advocating, the complainant and accused have agreed for an out-of-court settlement. They are willing to close the case and if that happens the accused will come of jail on bail. But because of lockdown, he has to stay in jail. Also in other cases, many accused are waiting for justice," he added.

  • The court will resume work from June 8.
  • Many pending cases will be decided.
  • Accused who are found guilty will stay in jail.
  • If acquitted, the accused will come out of jail.
  • Since the court will hear old cases on priority, there will be less crowding.
  • Matters which can be resolved amicably will be given priority.
