Pune’s Manoj Naravane to be next Army Chief?

NEW DELHI/PUNE: Lt Gen Manoj Mukund Naravane, who hails from Pune, will be the next Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) helming the 1.3 million-strong force.
 
Naravane will take over from Gen Bipin Rawat who retires on December 31. 

PTI quoted government sources that Lt Gen Naravane’s appointment has been cleared at the highest level, adding that the government has followed the principle of seniority in the appointment.

Army Chief Gen Rawat will retire on December 31 after a three-year stint. He is expected to be appointed as the country’s first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).

Lt Gen Naravane had assumed the current charge of Vice Chief of the Army Staff on September 1 2019. Before being appointed as Vice Chief of Army, Lt Gen Naravane was the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the operationally sensitive Eastern Command based in Kolkata. 

Lt Gen Naravane is son of ex-Indian Air Force (IAF) officer Mukund Naravane and Sudha Naravane, who was a popular newsreader at All India Radio (AIR), Pune station and noted Marathi writer.  He completed his school education from Jnana Prabhodhini Prashala in Sadashiv Peth. 

Later, he joined the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla and the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun. Naravane was commissioned into the 7th Battalion, Sikh Light Infantry Regiment in June 1980.
He has  helmed key appointments in active counter insurgency environments and was a part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force in Sri Lanka during Operation PAWAN.
 
The Lt General is a highly decorated and accomplished officer who has been awarded the ‘Sena Medal’ (Distinguished) for command of his Battalion in J&K, the ‘Vishisht Seva Medal’ for his services as the Inspector General Assam Rifles (North) in Nagaland, the ‘Ati Vishisht Seva Medal’ for command of a prestigious Strike Corps and was honoured with ‘Param Vishisht Seva Medal’ for his distinguished services as the GOC-in-C of the Army Training Command.
