Pt Shivkumar Sharma and  Pt Jasraj to perform at Sawai

PUNE: With some artistes making a grand comeback and new ones taking the stage for the first time, the Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal declared the names of the artistes performing at the 67th edition of Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav.

The detailed schedule of the event, which will be held from December 11 to 15, was also released by the organisers in Pune on Tuesday.

Commemorating the birth centenary year of Pt Firoz Dastur, senior disciple of Sawai Gandharva, two of his disciples will be paying tribute to him during the festival.

For the first three days of the festival, the timings would be from 4 pm to 10 pm. While the organisers have asked for permission to continue the event from 4 pm to midnight on the fourth day, it is still in process. 

Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal Executive President Shrinivas Joshi said that District Collector Naval Kishore Ram looked positive about permitting the festival to be held till midnight on the said day. On the last day of the festival, the timings are from noon to 10 pm.

Viraj Joshi, the 16-year-old grandson of late Bhimsen Joshi, who initiated the festival, will be performing at Sawai this year on Day 3. On the same day, Kedia Brothers, Mor Mukut and Manoj Kedia from Jharkhand will have a joint performance of sitar and sarod. “It’s been a long time since we have had performers from this region, and we are very happy about it,” Joshi said. 

Ken Zuckerman from Switzerland, who is a disciple of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, will be playing the sarod. Pt Jasraj, who has been a regular at the festival for quite a few years but was not present last year, will be performing this year on Day 3 itself.

Artistes, who would be performing for the first time at the Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav, include vocalists Sandip Bhattacharjee, Swami Kripakarananda, Viraj Joshi, Omkarnath Havaldar, Atul Khandekar and Ruchira Kedar, sitar and sarod players Kedia Brothers, Dhrupad Sisters, violinist Tejas Upadhye and Odissi dancer Reela Hota.

The sale of tickets will start from 9 am onwards on December 1. Tickets would be available at Behare Ambewale (Shanipar), Shirish Traders - Bodhani (Kamla Nehru Park), Navdikar Musicals (Kothrud) and Abhiruchi Foods (Aranyeshwar - Sahakar Nagar). Tickets can also be booked online at www.esawai.com. Season ticket chairs would be available at Rs 4,000 and Rs 3,000, whereas Indian seating season ticket would be priced at Rs 499. Daily chair and Indian seating ticket would be available at Rs 850 and Rs 200 respectively.

- Dec 11 (4 pm to 10 pm): Vocalist Girish Sanzgiri, carnatic style veena player Jayanthi Kumaresh, vocalist Archana Kanhere, flautist Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia.
- Dec 12 (4 pm to 10 pm): Vocalist Sandip Bhattacharjee, sitar and sarod players Kedia Brothers (Mor Mukut and Manoj Kedia), vocalist Manjiri Karve Alegaonkar, santoor player Pt Shiv Kumar Sharma.
- Dec 13 (4 pm to 10 pm): Dhrupad Sisters Amita Sinha Mahapatra, Janhavi Phansalkar and Anuja Borude (Pakhawaj), vocalist Viraj Joshi, sarod player Ken Zuckerman, veteran vocalist Sangeet Martand Pt Jasraj.
- Dec 14 (4 pm to midnight): Vocalist Omkarnath Havaldar, joint performance of Tejas Upadhye (violin) and Shakir Khan (sitar), vocalist Swami Kripakarananda, Odissi dancer Reela Hota, veteran vocalist Pandita Ashwini Bhide Deshpande, senior violinist Pt L Subramaniam.
- Dec 15 (noon to 10 pm): Vocalist Atul Khandekar, vocalist Ruchira Kedar and vocalist Chadrashekhar Vaze, Sitarist Niladri Kumar, senior vocalist Pt Upendra Bhat, acclaimed vocalist Pt Ajoy Chakrabarty, senior vocalist Dr Prabha Atre.
