Protests in city against Kathua and Unnao incidents

Pune: The Socialist Party of India and other organisations staged a protest at Goodluck Chowk on Friday against the brutal incident of rape in Unnao in Uttar Pradesh which was allegedly committed by a BJP MLA and the murder of an 8-year-old Kashmiri Bakarwal girl Asifa, after she was gang-raped in a temple in Kathua in Jammu.

The protest saw the participation of youths from nearby colleges and by the members of the organisations like Lokayat, Socialist Party of India and Abhivyakti.

While speaking at the protest, Alka Joshi of the Socialist Mahila Sabha, said, “There is an increasing trend of sexual violence in the country. We demand that the culprits be arrested with immediate effect.”

Sushant Sonone of the Action for Rights of Child-ARC said children are falling victims to religious violence. Similar protests to happen on Sunday The Fergusson College will see two other protests on Sunday against the two incidents.

A spontaneous appeal by a Facebook user has garnered a tremendous response. “I had appealed to the public to gather at the Goodluck Chowk to protest against these incidents as I was tired of virtual protests,” Mohasin Shaikh, the Facebook user, said, adding, ”I have received more than 200 enquiries from people asking how they can join. We will have a peaceful protest at the chowk at 5 pm on Sunday.”

At the same venue, on Sunday at 6 pm, the All India Democratic Women’s Association, Democratic Youth Federation of India, Strimukti Sanghatna, Masum, Kashtakari Panchayat, Strivani and Nari Samata Manch have organised a protest rally from Goodluck Chowk to Dnyaneshwar Paduka Chowk.
