Prisoners attack rival in Yerwada central jail

Pune: Three prisoners attacked a 27-year-old undertrial for murder in Yerwada Central jail on Saturday afternoon. Police said that both belong to different groups in Pimpri-Chinchwad and the attack was to avenge the murder of the cousin of one of them.

An FIR has been registered with the Yerawada police station. The incident took place around 3 pm outside CG Barrack designated for the undertrial prisoner.

Police have identified the injured inmate as Vivek Sopan Kalbhor alias Sonya, who is facing murder charges. Those booked for the attack have been identified as Dashrath Waghmode, Uttam Gadhwe and Sumedh Lahu Gaikwad alias Gotya, all under-trials for murder.

Police said that Kalbhor is an accused in the murder of Waghmode’s cousin. On Saturday, when the jail inmates were taken out, Waghmode first beat up Kalbhor. Then Gadhwe and Gaikwad also joined and started thrashing him. Waghmode then picked up a plastic bucket and hit Kalbhor’s head. Later, Gadhwe picked up a stone and hit him on the head, inflicting serious injuries. The fight was stopped by the prison staff.
Kalbhor is the kingpin of a local group of goons, which goes by the name of Ravan Sena and his gang had allegedly murdered a man related to Waghmode.
