Prices of pulses high due to low supply & high demand

PUNE: Retail prices of pulses such as pigeon pea (tur), split green gram (moong) and black gram split (urad) continue to remain high at Rs 100-120 per kg. The wholesale prices of pulses also witnessed a hike of 20 per cent in the last couple of days due to an increase in demand and low supply.

“The retail price of tur has been Rs 100 per kg, while moong and urad are in the range of Rs 100-120 per kg for a couple of weeks now. It is only chana dal that is Rs 70-80 per kg, while all other lentils are Rs 100 per kg or more. However, there has been a further 20 per cent hike in the wholesale rates of pulses in the last couple of days and, therefore, there are chances that the prices might increase, although it depends on the market in coming days,” said Vinit Shah, owner of Gukuldas Jetharam Shah, a store in Laxmi Road.

There was also a hike in the wholesale rates of pulses last week.

Nitin Nahar, a wholesale trader of pulses at Market Yard mentioned that there has been an overall hike of Rs 5-6 per kg in the wholesale prices of pulses.

Nahar said, “There has been an increase of Rs 5-6 per kg in the wholesale prices of pulses, especially moong and urad dal, which have reached Rs 100 in the wholesale market. There is also a slight increase in the price of tur as well. The new crop has started coming but still, the supply is slow and increase in demand has increased the wholesale rate. However, in another fortnight, the situation might change, as the supply of new crop will be better.”

Green vegetables such as cauliflower, cabbage and gourd continue to remain high at Rs 50 to Rs 60 per kg in the retail market, while okra, green peas and bitter gourd remain high at Rs 60-80 per kg.

However, the retail price of onion is stable at Rs 30-40 per kg and leafy vegetables such as coriander, fenugreek and spinach also remained stable at Rs 20 per bundle.

Ashutosh Sangle, a vegetable vendor, said, “The prices of green vegetables continue to remain high since the last few weeks. The prices of green peas remained high at Rs 60-70 per kg throughout the season, while cauliflower and cabbage were at Rs 50 to Rs 60 per kg.”

“The supply of vegetables remained constant in the last few weeks. The supply of green pea has reduced. Normally during winter, the supply of leafy vegetables gets affected but this year, there was hardly any winter so the supply has remained constant,” said Vilas Bhujbal, President, Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard Aadte Association.

Bhujbal further said, “Supply of onion is also very good, as the new produce has started coming. However, the demand continues to remain high and therefore, the wholesale prices remained stable from the last couple of weeks. The supply is good and therefore, there will be no further rise in onion prices.”
