Prices Of Onions Breach Rs 100-mark In Retail Market

Pune: Onion continues to leave people in tears, as the wholesale price of this bulb increased to Rs 9,000 per quintal on Sunday at Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC). The wholesale price of red onion (new onion) has also increased to Rs 65 to Rs 70 per kg. The retail rate of old onion is soaring at Rs 100-Rs 120 per kg. The red onion has increased to Rs 80 per kg on Sunday.

The extended rainfall has damaged the kharif crops in Ahmednagar and Nashik while the stocked onion of rabi season has been exhausted. This lack of supply of onion has accelerated the wholesale price across the State.

As on Saturday, the price at Kolhapur and Ahmednagar APMC was Rs 9,000 per quintal while at Solapur APMC, it was Rs 9,500 per quintal.

“The supply of onion was affected due to rainfall. The production of new onion has got spoiled due to rain while the stock of onion with farmers was over. Therefore, the retail price has increased and old onion price is soaring at Rs 100-120 while the red onion is being sold for Rs 80 per kg,” said Yogesh Indulkar, a vegetable vendor in Mandai.

“The supply of stocked onion has reduced, as there is hardly any old onion with the farmers. There is an improvement in the supply of new onions, but due to more demand, its price has also increased to Rs 65-70 per kg,” said Vilas Bhujbal, President, Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard Adate Association.
