Police will help civic body in anti-spitting, cleanliness drive

PUNE: Now, the Pune city police will extend help for the successful implementation of the cleanliness campaign started by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) under the Swachh Survekshan. The police will now participate in anti-spitting campaign.

Speaking on this issue, Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao said, “We conducted a coordination meeting with police commissioner and traffic department officials recently. During the meeting, several issues were discussed such as police protection for PMC’s anti-encroachment drive, filing complaints of defacing city, encroachment along the roadside and illegal constructions. The police department has shown positive response in extending help to the civic body.”

Rao said, “The civic body has started an anti-spitting and cleanliness drive in the city against the background of Swachh Survekshan. We have appealed to the police department to join drive and help to make the city livable. Police Commissioner K Venkatesham is ready to take part in the drive. Now, the police will create awareness on cleanliness in the city with the help of their staff.

“The traffic police will help the civic body to stop spitting on roads and chowks. They have also enrolled their staffers for Pune Half Marathon for cleanliness which has been organised by PMC and Sakal Media Group on December 9,” Rao added.

Single window system to register PMC complaints

At present, the civic body faces problems in filing police complaints on different issues. The civic body takes action on encroachments on roads, illegal constructions, illegal digging of roads for laying cables, defacing, illegal hoardings flexes, action against abandoned vehicles. After taking action, the PMC files case against offenders. The civic body has to follow up issues and spend more time to file complaints in police stations.

After raising the issue of delay in filing police complaints by civic chief Rao in the coordination meeting, Police Commissioner K Venkatesham has given assurance to the corporation to start single window system to tackle all problems of the civic body. In the single window system, civic officials can register any complaints. The system will transfer complaints to concerned police stations so that PMC officials don’t have to visit different police stations to file complaints.
