PMPML gets a good response on Bus Day

PUNE: The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited’s (PMPML) attempt to generate Rs 2 crore by observing Bus Day on Monday got a good response from commuters in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. The administration had decided to achieve this target by providing service to 12 lakh passengers.

According to officials, the average daily earning of PMPML is approximately Rs 1.55 crore which generally reduces to Rs 1.35-1.40 crore during the weekends.

Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited Traffic Manager Anant Waghmare said, “As many as 1,807 buses plied on the roads on Monday and we have almost achieved the target of Rs 2 crore set by the authority. Till 5 pm, a revenue of around Rs 1.07 crore from normal travellers and Rs 50 lakh from pass holders was generated. Earlier, it was planned to operate 1,700 buses on this day.”

“The frequency of the buses had also been increased by about 5 to 10 minutes on busy routes. The buses were also kept in good condition by carrying out maintenance work in advance to ensure they operate without any breakdown,” added Waghmare.

To make Bus Day successful, the administration made sure that the buses operate on time.

Also, they had deputed ticket collectors at busy junctions. The leaves and weekly offs of employees had also been cancelled.

Soumya Pandey, a student who has been travelling by bus for the last five years, said, “I have observed that the PMPML was aware that there was a requirement of more buses in the city and the introduction of pollution-free e-buses has been appreciated by commuters.”

“I expect PMPML service to be more hassle-free and there should be more connectivity for the sake of citizens residing in distant places who are only dependent on PMPML bus service,” she said.

Asha Shinde, PMP Pravasi Manch activist, said that she spoke to several commuters on Monday who complained about crowded buses which often lead to thefts.

“Women passengers complained that often, the buses carry more  passengers than their capacity which have led to an increase in theft cases. Some passengers also said that they were not aware of the ‘Bus Day’ plans, however, since they could observe less crowd in the buses, they appreciated the effort,” added Shinde.
