PMC, Uruli-Phursungi villagers fail to reach any consensus

PUNE: Uruli-Phursungi villagers refused the request made by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to allow them to dump the garbage and also run the processing plant there. A meeting was held between the villagers and the PMC on Monday to find a solution, but there was no consensus.

The villagers demanded that the PMC should adhere to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) order and stick to their assurance made in January this year for not dumping the waste at this site.

Uruli Phursungi Depot Hatao Samiti Head Vijay Bhadale said, “The PMC asked us for more time to dump waste at the depot and they sought permission for operating the processing unit at the dumping site. However, they failed to follow the NGT order which directs them to stop the dumping.”

Bhadale said, “In 2017 our village was included in PMC limits, but still we have not been provided basic amenities. There were bad roads, inadequate water supply, and no one to look into cases of water pipeline leakages. PMC officials have ignored our demands but they want our land for dumping the waste and also have not given jobs to the youths from the villages.”

As PMC has stopped dumping of garbage at Uruli-Phursungi depot due to the ongoing protest, residents of Pune claimed that the PMC was not collecting garbage waste from their societies.

Asawari Jog, a resident of Model Colony, said, “Again from past three days, the PMC vehicle has not come to collect garbage. Thus we were forced to store it within the society.”

PMC Solid Waste Department Joint Commissioner Dnyaneshwar Molak said, “After a talk with the villagers, the PMC garbage vans have been collecting waste from societies. We have instructed the processing unit operator to increase their capacity at 57 processing units located in PMC limits. Also we have set up a new unit at Hadapsar.”
