PMC starts door-to-door waste collection in SRA

PUNE: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has started the door-to-door  service of waste collection in the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) residential scheme to ensure waste is properly disposed and keep the SRA clean. This is the first such initiative by SRA.

SRA, Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, Chief Executive Officer Rajendra Nimbalkar, who was Additional Municipal Commissioner of PMC and handling Solid Waste Department, has taken the initiative. He has allowed PMC SWaCH to start door-to-door service in SRA. On an experimental basis, the service is going on in SRA in Dhankawadi for the past four months. Now, it will implement it in 35 SRA schemes.

While speaking to Sakal Times, Joint Municipal Commissioner Dnyaneshwar Molak said, “We were trying to provide door-to-door waste collection service in SRA schemes. However, people were not cooperative. They were not providing segregated garbage and paying monthly charge as well to SWaCH. So, door-to-door service was not provided to SRA. Now, SRA CEO Nimbalkar has taken initiative to appoint SWaCH waste pickers to ensure collection from properties in the SRA. Developers of SRA scheme will pay the monthly charges to SWaCH.”

Under the guidance of Nimbalkar, an awareness programme was conducted in SRA schemes on  Friday, which persuaded residents to help authorities. Ek Disha Parivartan - Susanvad was organised by local organisations. Zopadi Punarvasan Pradhikaran showcased success stories from within the community and how cleaner greener surroundings impacts lives positively. A motivational speaker addressed the gatherings. It was all focused on understanding the issues of the local residents and motivating them to do better.

While addressing residents, Nimbalkar said, “We will enable more recycling, and live in cleaner surroundings where our children can play without worrying about falling sick.”
