PMC to put CCTV in underpasses

PUNE: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in underpasses not being used by people due to security reasons.

This issue of security in underpasses has been raised by all party corporators in the monthly General Body meeting held on Tuesday. The PMC administration sought permission to allot stalls on contract basis at Bhosale underpass located on JM Road near Modern High School.

City Mayor Murlidhar Mohol has ordered PMC to conduct a survey and find out the problem of each underpass and provide a solution for its safe use.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corporator Jyostna Ekbote said, “The administration hasn’t done anything to make underpass safe for public use, and now they want to use underpass for commercial purposes by allocating stalls. There is one college and school around the underpass but due to security reasons, no one is using it. The corporation should have to depute bouncers in underpasses.”

Members across the party line echoed the same concern. BJP corporator Mahesh Wable suggested allotting stalls to women self-help groups.

BJP corporator Sheetal Sawant demanded to depute security personnel in underpasses so that people can use it and it will help to stop the alleged illegal things that take place in these underpasses.

Additional City Engineer of Traffic Planning Department Shriniwas Bonala said, “It is true that due to security reasons, people are not using underpasses. There are 14 underpasses in the city located in different areas. We have decided to install CCTV cameras in these underpasses.”
