PMC to install CCTVs in schools for security

PUNE: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to install CCTV cameras in PMC-run schools for security purposes. Right now, there are security persons deputed in schools but they are inadequate in number, as most of the schools are located in slum areas. Hence, the PMC has decided to provide CCTV support. The PMC Standing Committee has approved Rs 40 lakh for the CCTV cameras.

While speaking with media, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)  Standing committee Chairman Sunil Kamble said, “The PMC schools are located in slum areas and security is a major problem there. It is the PMC’s duty to provide a safe and secure environment for students as well as teachers. Hence, we have taken the decision to install CCTV cameras in school premises. In the first phase, we have sanctioned Rs 40 lakh for the same.”

The PMC School Department official further added, “There is a lack of security in PMC schools. One or two security personnel cannot cover the entire school premises. Therefore, CCTVs have become a necessity. This will help in curbing illegal activities generally carried out by outsiders after the school is over.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)  School Department requires more than Rs 2 crore to install CCTVs in all schools. In Rs 40 lakh, we would be able to cover only 20 schools right now.

There are 225 PMC-run schools of Marathi, Urdu, Kannada and English Medium. More than one lakh students are studying in these schools. There are 142 school buildings in which schools run in two and three shifts. The PMC spends Rs 35,000 per year per student.

At present, the school board is providing security to primary schools and corporation security department is deputing security persons for secondary schools. There are two security persons in every school building.
