PMC to install CCTVs in 230 civic schools

MUMBAI/PUNE: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will install Closed Circuit Television (CCTVs) cameras in 230 schools. The decision was taken after an increase in the cases of crimes against minors. However, there is no proposal of a biometric system for attendance in the schools.

Medha Kulkarni, MLA from Kothrud, had raised a question about the security of schools kids and increasing crime against minors in Legislative Assembly on Tuesday. While replying to her question, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that the PMC has a plan to install CCTV cameras in civic schools.

Kulkarni asked whether there was any proposal of installing a biometric system and centralised control room to monitor the attendance of the school children. The CM said there was no such plan.

“The PMC has not allocated funds for biometric system in civic schools, but there is a provision in the civic budget to install CCTV cameras in 230 civic schools,” Fadnavis said.

“The PMC has made a provision of Rs 41.4 lakh in the civic budget for this and has already started a pre-calculation of the work. As the work completes, the cameras will be installed in 230 civic schools,” Fadnavis added.

“The security of the children is a big concern for all. The parents of the students will be relieved by the initiative of installing CCTVs in civic schools at all locations,” said Medha Kulkarni.

“There are 310 civic schools and over one lakh students studying in Pune city limits. “It is the responsibility of the civic education board to ensure the safety of students. The installation of CCTVs is a precautionary measure to ensure that there is no untoward incident on the premises of civic schools,” she added.
