Pune: In the background of the water crisis in the city, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has appealed to the citizens not to waste water during Holi but have not said anything on rain dance parties.
VG Kulkarni, Chief Superintendent of Water Supply Department, said, “We appeal to the citizens to not waste water during Holi. We have to use the water available in dams till July. So we need to use the water carefully. There is a drought situation across the State. We cannot afford wastage of water at this crucial time of summer.”
He further said, “During summer season, people use more water. We already issued an instruction not to use drinking water for gardening or washing vehicles, etc.”
At present, there is 10.54 Thousand Million Cubic feet (TMC) water available in three dams - Varasgaon, Panshet and Khadakwasla. Out of that, Khadakwasla division of Water Resource Department has decided to give one rotation to Indapur and other talukas for drinking purpose. It will be around 5 TMC of water from dams.
Meanwhile, the civic body has already taken a decision to stop water on Thursdays to save water. Besides that, PMC is supplying water for five hours once a day since last October to save water.
The Corporation is getting 1,350 million litre per day (MLD) water. Earlier, it was cut down by the Water Resource Department from 1,350 MLD to 1150 MLD. Based on that, the civic body had revised the water schedule of the city last year before Diwali. However, after receiving a lot of criticism from opposition political parties and social groups, CM Fadnavis intervened and issued an order to restore water supply of Pune city as per 1,350 MLD.
