PUNE: In the digital age, the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) initiative of doorstep service for property tax collection is proving to be flop scheme as in last two years, only 10 people paid tax through this service.

Doorstep service was launched in 2017 with an aim to benefit senior citizens and those from the working class who cannot visit civic offices easily.

It was also seen as a move to reach out to more people and improve tax collection. The fees charged for this service is Rs 97 per visit of the doorstep operator.

According to Property Tax Department statistics, in 2017, two people paid through this service, while the number reached 10 in 2018.

Speaking to Sakal Times, Vilas Kanade, head of Property Tax Department, said, “The PMC has given different options to people to pay property tax. Doorstep service is one of them. Till date, only 10 taxpayers have used this facility. This year, we haven’t received any response. We were expecting response from senior citizens. However, it is not happening.”

Other options given by the PMC for tax payment includes online payment, payment in banks, corporation ward offices and citizen facilitation centres.

They also send SMS to taxpayers and give hyperlink to pay online tax. The numbers of online taxpayers has increased. The civic body is also giving discount in tax for online payments.

On the other hand, it is charging Rs 97 per visit to collect tax, which could be a reason for its failure.
