PUNE: Famous Marathi playwright Chandrakant Prabhakar alias Champra Deshpande (72) was injured after being hit on the head with a belt while he was returning home from evening walk on Friday.

Deshpande’s statement has been recorded by the police who are investigating the case.

According to the police, the incident took place around 6.30 pm near a sweet shop in Bibvewadi. Deshpande and three others were walking when he was hit on head with a belt by a man. “I was injured due to the metal buckle. I was taken to a nearby private hospital, where I received eight stitches. The hospital authorities called the police who recorded my statement,” said Deshpande, who is a resident of Sahakar Nagar.

He has written a popular Marathi play ‘Dhol Tashe’ which is a critique of Ganesh festival. The play was frowned upon by many as he had criticised the practices associated with the religiosity of the festival.

Senior Police Inspector Ajit Ladake, in-charge of Bibvewadi police station, said, “Our investigation is going on and our teams are trying to trace the accused.”

Another officer added, “We suspect that the accused is either mentally unstable or was under influence of alcohol or narcotic substance.”
