Pimpri Chinchwad: Three arrested for selling Remdesivir illegally at a private hospital in Nigdi

Pune:  The cases of selling Remdesivir illegally are rising in Pune district amid the surge in novel coronavirus. The Pimpri Chinchwad police on Wednesday nabbed three people in Nigdi for allegedly selling Remdesivir illegally at a private hospital. A case has been registered against a ward boy of a private hospital and his two colleagues for black marketing of the medicine for coronavirus patients, police said.

According to the police officials, the ward boy offered medicine to a relative of a patient at extra cost than the actual price when the medicine was not available in multiple medical stores in the city. The ward boy and his two colleagues, one of whom is the security guard of the same private hospital were arrested by the police under relevant sections.

The complainant's mother was found positive for the novel coronavirus and he was asked to get Remdesivir by hospital authorities. After hunting for the injections at many medical stores in the city, he approached the ward boy to get instruction as to where he can get the Remdesivir available after which the ward boy himself offered it to him and claimed extra money than the original price.

The accused have been identified as Shahid Shaikh (34), Vijay Ranjane (35) and Vaishnavi Takorkar (30), A case under Indian Penal Code, Essential Commodities Act and Drugs and Cosmetic Act was registered at Nigdi police station against the three.

Meanwhile, FDA has urged families to first approach hospital pharmacies or call the chemists’ association at 9404968053/9822404960/9822192558 if they’re still unable to get the Remdesivir.

With COVID-19 cases surging daily, black-marketing of Remdesivir has become common across Pune district as the injection is being sold for multiple times its retail price via black market. According to different complaints reported by consumers, the drug is being sold at rates ranging from Rs 17,000 to 20,000. The actual price of the injection is Rs 5,400.
