PIMPRI: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and opposition members took the civic administration to task on Thursday over water scarcity in various parts of the city.
Speaking at the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s General Body (GB) meeting, the corporators criticised the municipal officials’ alleged apathy over the problems faced by residents due to inadequate water supply in the city.
Mayor Rahul Jadhav presided over the meeting.
The corporators alleged that the various city areas were receiving irregular and inadequate water even after the civic administration introduced once a week water cut.
The members also alleged that many areas were receiving water at odd hours, even at late midnight.
These charges were made by the ruling BJP members as well those belonging to the NCP, Shiv Sena, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and independents.
Replying to the corporators’ charges, Municipal Commissioner Shravan Hardikar said that the city’s water requirement is increasing due to increasing population and added that all city areas could not be provided adequate water daily in the morning and evening. “The plans to take water from the Andra and Bhama Askhed dam projects need to be implemented soon to meet the city’s increasing water needs,” he said.
The commissioner said that the city’s water supply system needs to be improved and restrictions need to be imposed on controlling excessive use of water.
