PGDSS threatens indefinite strike if PMC does not stop dumping waste

PUNE: As the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) failed to stop open garbage dumping at Uruli-Phursungi garbage depot, Phursungi Garbage Depot Sangharsh Samiti (PGDSS) blocked the entry for garbage trucks and vans and stopped them from dumping waste at the garbage depot from Monday.

PGDSS threatened that if the civic body fails to provide written assurance about stopping the open dumping, they will go on an indefinite strike.

Earlier, the PMC had given assurance in an affidavit to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that they will stop open dumping at Uruli-Phursungi garbage depot from January 2020. However, it seems they have failed to do so.

PGDSS President Bhagwan Badhale said, “NGT had ordered PMC to stop dumping waste from January 1, 2020, but after the request by PMC Solid Waste Department, we gave them 15 more days to find an alternative.”

“Even after one month, it seems that the civic body has been dumping garbage at the garbage depot,” said Badhale. “Accordingly, we visited the site and blocked the entry of the vehicles,” said Badhale.

“We have decided that from Monday onwards, we will agitate at the site of the dumping ground and will not allow a single vehicle to dump waste in the open,” said Ananat Badhale, a member of PGDSS.

Badhale said, “Until PMC does not give us in writing about stopping the open dumping, we will not roll back our agitation and will block vehicles’ entry to the garbage depot.”
