PCMC-run pools will be kept open for the summer

Pimpri: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has decided to keep open its swimming pools this summer season.
Some social organisations had demanded that the municipal corporation close its swimming pools this summer in view of the water scarcity situation in the city.

The city residents are presently being supplied drinking water on every alternate day as the Pavana dam has less water storage this year.

The civic administration has said that the residents living near the swimming pools have not complained of shortage of water on account of the water consumption at the swimming pools.

The PCMC runs 14 swimming pools and presently the swimming pool at Yamuna Nagar is closed to carry out maintenance work.
Each swimming pool requires one lakh litres of water per day, thus the monthly consumption of these swimming pools is 26 lakh litres of water.

The PCMC Water Department asked its Sports Department about the details of water consumption at the swimming pools. The Sports Department which provided the information, had said it will temporarily close the swimming pools if needed.

The PCMC Water Department’s Joint City Engineer Makarand Nikam said there is no need to close the swimming pools. “Many of these swimming pools use borewell water and the same water is recycled after its purification,” he said.
