PCMC puts off Std X summer classes due to heat

PIMPRI: Citing the rise in mercury, Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has put off extra summer classes for Standard X students in its 18 schools this year. These classes are likely to be held in June, according to sources.
The extra classes for the SSC students are conducted to improve the performance of the civic body-run schools in the board examination.
Every year, over 2,000 students in the PCMC-run schools avail of the extra classes. Special attention is paid to subjects like mathematics, science and English as the percentage of failure in these subjects is very high.
The extra classes are conducted in the PCMC-run schools till June 15, daily for two hours.
Significantly, the municipal corporation-run schools have obtained 90 per cent passing percentage in the SSC examination during the last five years. The number of students securing more than 90 per cent marks in the board examination has also increased.
Parents have expressed fear that closure of the extra classes may have an affect on the performance of the students in the SSC examination.
Parag Munde, PCMC’s Acting Education Officer, said that the extra classes for the Std X students are not conducted this month due to the very high temperature.
“Instead, it is planned to conduct the extra classes in June,” he said.
Meanwhile, extra summer classes of a majority of private schools for the Standard X students in Pimpri Chinchwad have been going on as usual.
