PCB transforms dumping ground into sports ground

PUNE: A dumping ground near Wanawadi Bazar School has been transformed into a sports ground named ‘Major Dhyanchand Sports Ground’ by Pune Cantonment Board (PCB), which was inaugurated on Saturday.

PCB President Rajiv Sethi inaugurated the ground and declared it open, in the presence of Vice-President Atul Gaikwad, Chief Executive Officer, DN Yadav and all elected members of the board.

PCB had organised Swachhta Pakhwada week in December when they spotted vacant land opposite Wanawadi Bazar School, which was used as a dumping yard.

“The initiative was taken in a bid to ensure cleanliness in the cantonment and transform few chronic spots into environmental parks. Hence, we built a sports ground there, which will be beneficial for locals. The sports ground facilitates several sports like volleyball, tennis, basketball, malkhamb, one km jogging track, open air exercise, kabbadi, etc,” said Yadav.

“We immediately started working on the construction of the ground after Swachhta Pakhwada. It took around four months to complete the construction. The entire infrastructure has cost an estimated Rs 15 lakh. Garden Overseer of PCB, Jayant Kanganekar has donated open gym equipment,” said Chief Engineer Officer of PCB, Sukhdeo Patil.
