PUNE: The coronavirus scare is adversely affecting the travel industry as travellers are cancelling and avoiding air or rail travel.

The Railways denied that the mass cancellation is due to coronavirus. However, the tour operators are saying that passengers are cancelling their travel plans due to coronavirus.

Spokesperson of Pune railway Division Manoj Jhawar said, “The passengers have not cancelled their tickets due to outbreak of coronavirus. In the recent past, the Railways is maintaining tracks and conducting blocks, which caused several trains being cancelled and diverted to other routes.”

Director of Travel Agents Association of Pune (TAAP) Nilesh Bhansali said that there is no clarity if the airlines will allow cancellation of bookings or rescheduling without levying charges.”

“We are dealing with angry customers every day. On one hand, we don’t want to push our clients to go ahead with travel considering it may be a health risk. On the other hand, the airlines are not giving any easy way out. The coronavirus outbreak has put a question mark on the entire summer travel season,” said Bhansali.
