Passenger assaults staffer of Spice Jet at Pune airport

Pune: After an earlier incident wherein airline ground staff manhandled and dragged a passenger at Delhi Airport on October 15, 2017, following a tiff, recently, a passenger assaulted a staff of Spice Jet inside the Pune airport after an argument related to boarding a Delhi bound flight. The incident took place on June 13.

The flight was supposed to depart at 7.20 am, however, the passenger arrived at the check-in counter at around 7 am. According to the staff, the passenger asked the airline staff to provide him a boarding pass. As the same had closed half an hour earlier, Abhijeet started an argument with the staff and slapped him in front of hundreds of other airline passengers and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).

The source added, “This happened when duty staff was trying to convince him that the flight was already on its way to the runway and was ready to take off. To this, the passenger used abusive words against the staff. During the incident, the airport officials also rushed to the check-in counter. The entire incident has been captured in the CCTV camera also. Before sending him to the police station, the airport officials also verified the incident through the record captured in the camera,” said the source.

When the incident happened, everyone was shocked. The senior staff of the airlines rushed to the spot. Before any major incident could happen, on duty CISF personnel took him into their custody. The CISF personnel took him to Vimantal police chowky inside the premises. Vimantal police has registered a non-cognisable offence against Deshmukh in this regard.

According to airport sources, the airline officials stationed at Pune Airport have sent the report to their headquarters in this regard. They have alse requested that the passenger be put in the no-fly list. Now, in this regard, the airline headquarters will take a final decision and will inform the DGCA of the entire incident.

Another official from the airline on condition of anonymity said, “The passenger arrived late and started an argument with the staff. We were also shocked by the incident. We have already written to our headquarters and asked for him to be put in the no-fly list immediately.”

The culprit
 According to a source at Pune airport, the passenger was identified as Abhijeet Deshmukh travelling by SG 8937 Pune-Delhi flight.
