Parking banned near airport arrival gate

Pune: The Pune airport authority has banned vehicle parking near the arrival gate of the terminal building. The decision came after several complaints by passengers that the arrival area is always choked during peak hours. However, the authority decided a few months ago to penalise vehicle owners if they parked near the arrival area.

According to Pune Airport officials, it has been observed that passengers as well as vehicles gather in the arrival area. Several private vehicles enter the arrival area and wait for over five minutes. If the plan to penalise erring vehicles is executed, no vehicle will enter the arrival area outside the terminal building.

According to the officials, the number of flights and passengers has been increasing. The AAI conducted many experiments for smooth flow of traffic in front of terminals. However, the situation remains the same during peak hours.

Ajay Kumar, Director, Pune Airport, said, “Vehicles cannot be parked near the arrival area. We have also deputed a marshal to monitor this. We want airport premises for the passengers to walk easy.”

In September last year, the authority decided to close the 50-metre road in the airport premises.

Vehicles had to drop passengers in front of the departure terminal number one and move towards the exit gate number one. The vehicles, which pick up passengers from the arrival terminal, will travel on the road behind the ticketing counter.

Passengers welcomed the move. They appreciated the steps taken by the authority for the past few months.

Anup Bhatnagar, a frequent flier, said, “The Pune airport authority has taken several steps for passengers’ benefit. Vehicles parked during the peak hours cause inconvenience for many fliers. People can walk some 50-75 metres to take a cab or their vehicles. This is a very good initiative.”
