PUNE: By August 14 this year, only eight sub-divisions across India are deficient in rainfall. The country has witnessed an overall one per cent excess rainfall between June 1 and August 14. However, there was rainfall deficiency in the past five years during the same period.
As per data provided by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), there has been an increase in normal, excess and large excess subdivisions during August 7-14.
IMD data suggests that the cumulative rainfall for the season has been deficient for the country till 2014.
From June 1 to August 14, around 61 districts received normal or above normal rainfall this year. However, for 2018, 59 per cent districts had normal or above normal rainfall for the same period.
For 2015 and 2014, there was 55 per cent and 47 per cent respectively, in the country, which received normal or above normal rainfall, said IMD.
MONSOON SO FAR THIS YEAR
The entire country has 2 per cent excess rainfall with central India having 16 per cent excess rainfall between June 1 till date.
Similarly, the southern peninsula also has 4 per cent excess rainfall. Northwest region of the country has 7 per cent rainfall deficiency and east and the northeastern region have 15 per cent rainfall deficiency.
For Maharashtra, there is huge rainfall disparity. Marathwada has 21 per cent rainfall deficiency between June 1 and August 16, central Maharashtra has 68 per cent excess rainfall.
Vidarbha has one per cent excess rainfall while Konkan and Goa have reported 42 per cent excess rainfall.
The state overall is at 29 per cent excess rainfall between June 1 and August 16.
Pune district has 131 per cent excess rainfall whereas Pune city has reported 96 per cent excess rainfall.
