Opposition Slams Patil For Gifting Sarees In Slums

PUNE: Opposition parties and women’s organisation have objected to BJP’s newly elected MLA Chandrakant Patil’s act of distributing sarees to women in slums in Kothrud Assembly constituency.

The  Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) conducted an agitation on Wednesday whereas Pune Union of Housemaid and Domestic Workers also slammed Patil.

On the occasion of Bhaubeej celebrated on Tuesday, Patil had given instructions to BJP corporators to distribute sarees.

Pune Union of Housemaid and Domestic Workers President Kiran Moghe and Secretary Saraswati Bhandirge jointly released a statement which stated: “Patil was aiming the distribution at poor domestic workers and rag pickers. On behalf of domestic workers and several sections of unorganised sector workers, we strongly condemn this feudal attitude of Patil.”

The statement added, “Domestic workers, waste pickers, construction workers and other unorganised sector workers do not require such charity. What they need is a minimum wage, pension and social security measures that will allow them to live a life of dignity. We strongly feel it would be better if Patil utilised his elected position as MLA to work towards such a law.”

The NCP conducted an agitation at Khanduji Baba Chowk in Deccan, raising slogans like “We don’t want saree, we want development city.”

NCP City Unit President and newly elected MLA from Hadapsar Chetan Tupe said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi is against corruption and his ministers are doing corruption. Thus there are chances of distribution of other things during election period. It is an insult of democracy. Patil had done the same thing in Kolhapur. So, residents of Kolhapur rejected Patil. Now, he is distributing free sarees in Pune.”

Patil explained the distribution of sarees: “I  thought I should do something for my sisters on this Bhaubeej, who are economically backward, live in slums, work as domestic helps.”
