Onion prices drop in Pune

PUNE: The wholesale price of onions at Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC), Pune has reduced from Rs 13,000 on Monday to Rs 9,000 on Wednesday.

“The price is decreasing as the supply of new onion continues to remain stable in the market. The wholesale price of new onion on Wednesday is around Rs 35 to Rs 85 per kg,” said Baba Bibwe, Head, Vegetable and Fruit Market, APMC. 

The retail price of old onion which had risen to Rs 150-Rs 160  last week has reduced by Rs 20 while the retail price of the new onion is around Rs 60-Rs 80 which was soaring at Rs 120.

“Since the last two days, the onion price is reducing due to the increase in supply. The retail price of old onion is around Rs 100-120 and as the farmers have started bringing the new onion to the market, the price of new onion has also reduced and it is between 70-80 per kg which depends on quality of the onion,” said Tanveer Khan, another vegetable vendor.

The wholesale rate of onion continues to remain stable at Rs 100 per kg at Mumbai Potato and Onion Market for last two days while at Lasalgaon APMC, the average wholesale price of onion has increased from Rs 5,401 to Rs 6,100 per quintal due to less supply.

“The maximum rate of onion was Rs 7,500 while the average wholesale price has increased from Rs 5,401 on Tuesday to Rs 6,100 on Wednesday due to comparatively less supply,” said Narendra Wadhavane, Secretary, APMC, Lasalgaon.
