No hike in property, water taxes in PCMC

PIMPRI: Rejecting the municipal administration’s proposal for hike in property and water taxes, the Standing Committee of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has decided not to change the present tax structure.

The municipal corporation has not increased its property tax since 2013. Therefore the civic administration had proposed a hike in property tax as per the Ready Reckoner. The civic body was expected to earn Rs 180 crore from the hike in property tax.

Standing Committee Chairman Vilas Madigeri said the civic administration has been asked to identify the properties which are not yet registered and collect property tax from owners of these properties. During the last financial year, 7,500 unregistered properties were identified by the civic body and property tax was imposed on them.

The Standing Committee has decided to retain the existing tax on water consumption in the city.

The municipal administration had proposed increase in the water cess to prevent wastage of water and to ensure equitable water supply to residents of all city areas. The Standing Committee however unanimously decided not to increase the tax until adequate water is supplied to all city areas. At present, 6,000 litres of water per month is supplied free of cost for domestic use. Water tax  is levied for consumption  of more than 6,000 litres of water per month.
