NIA drops sedition charge against accused persons

PUNE: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has registered an FIR in the Elgar Parishad case and charged 11 people, including nine currently in jail, under provisions of the anti-terror law UAPA and the IPC. This comes days after the investigation agency was handed over the matter in Maharashtra by the Centre.

While the Pune police had applied IPC section 124A (sedition) in the case during the investigation, the NIA FIR does not have this charge.

Meanwhile, a special court on Monday granted time till February 6 to the Pune police and defence lawyers to file their say on the application filed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to transfer the Elgar Parishad case to the NIA court at Mumbai. The NIA submitted its FIR copy before the Pune court.

On January 29, the NIA moved an application before the special Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) Court, Pune.

The Union Ministry of Home Affair (MHA) had on January 24 transferred the probe into the Elgar Parishad case from Pune city police to the NIA.
