NGT upholds the norms for STP, says activist

PUNE: Nitin Deshpande, a city-based environmental activist, had approached National Green Tribunal (NGT) court one year ago after the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF) had relaxed several norms and standards of Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) in India. He recently won that case.

Standards including - Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Suspended Solids, Total Nitrogen, Ammonical Nitrogen and Fecal Coliform were relaxed by the CPCB and MoEF in 2016 and 2017.

Deshpande said, “351 rivers out of 323 rivers are polluted. Hence, there was a dire need to revise standards for BOD and COD so that the rivers would pollute more. The relaxed standards would have deteriorated the water quality, degraded the environment and be a retrograde step. The dilution will also affect human life and water quality.”

“One year ago, I had approached NGT filing a case against CPCB and MoEF’s decision on relaxing the norms. Now that I have won the case, all the norms of STP would be strictly followed and it will pollute the rivers in lesser ways,” Deshpande added.
