New lease of life for four patients in two days in city hospital

Pune: Aditya Birla Hospital successfully carried out two liver and four kidney transplant surgeries in a span of two days. The retrievals and transplants of organs were undertaken by a combined team of doctors from Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital, Pune, and Global Hospital, Thane.

The deceased donors, aged 42 and 46 years, both housewives hailing from Pune, suffered from a massive brain haemorrhage resulting in brain steam death. After detailed sessions of counselling, both the families came to terms with the situation and expressed their willingness for organ donation.

This noble cause resulted in the availability of two livers and four kidneys for transplantation to needy patients suffering from advanced cirrhosis of the liver or end-stage kidney disease, who otherwise would have succumbed to their illness.

At Aditya Birla Hospital, the recipient of the liver was a 54-year-old housewife from Sangli and a 60-year-old male from Mumbai.

On the other side, the kidney recipient was a 20-year-old girl student and a 37-year-old IT professional. One kidney was allotted to a hospital in Nashik and the other one to a hospital in Pune.

All the deceased donors’ organ allotment was done with the consultation of the Zonal Transplantation Co-ordination Committee (ZTCC).

“Retrieval of donor organs from brain dead patients has been possible due to the awareness on the part of the public at large as well as the concerted efforts at counselling of affected family members by hospital staff,” noted Rekha Dubey, CEO Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital.
