Nationwide strike likely to affect services in Pune

PUNE:  Banks, transportation, and ATM services may be hit severely in the city as employees, workers, trade unions and several federations have announced their support to the nationwide strike on Wednesday. The autorickshaw unions are also participating in the strike.

Also, 30 student unions from the city, including the National Students Union of India (NSUI), the Student Federation of India (SFI) and others have supported the strike called by 10 central trade unions.

In a joint statement issued in September 2019, the following trade unions announced their support: Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS), Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), All India United Trade Union Centre (AIUTUC), Trade Union Coordination Centre (TUCC), Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA), All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU), Labour Progressive Federation (LPF) and United Trade Union Congress (UTUC).

The demands include reversal of “the anti-worker, anti-people, anti-national policies of the government” such as commercialisation of education and increased fee structure and privatisation of railways. They are seeking farm loan waiver and increased minimum support price (MSP) to farm produce.

“Trade unions have raised multiple issues related to Public Sector Unit (PSU) mergers, disinvestment, which they claim have affected their livelihood. We have launched a long march to the Collector’s Office from the Labour Commissioner’s office,” said Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), Pune District President Kailash Kadam.

Many students are likely to take part in the strike across the country, including at the Savitribai Phule Pune University. NSUI activist Mohini Jadhav said, “Repeated attacks on the central universities, students and fee hikes are the issues going to be raised during the strike.”

All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) State Secretary, Ajit Navale said, “We are demanding farm loan wavier, increased farm produce MSP, implementation of the Swaminathan Committee report.”

According to a statement by the Indian Banks Association (IBA), six bank unions have decided to join the strike. So, ATM services may be affected due to this but online transactions such as NEFT, IMPS won’t be affected. They are protesting against merger of public sector banks.

As of now, no school holiday has been declared even though teachers’ associations have announced their support to the strike.
