MVSTF, UNICEF begin child rights drive in Maharashtra

PUNE: Maharashtra Village Social Transformation Foundation (MVSTF) and United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) India will conduct a special campaign on the issue of child rights as a part of the Children’s Day celebrations.

The third phase began from November 14 till November 30. The three-month-long campaign, distributed in three phases, covers 850 villages from 25 districts across Maharashtra.

The main aim of the campaign is to reach out to people and educate them about the issues of child rights and child marriage.

The purpose has been to create awareness among villagers. The last phase of the campaign will educate villagers about the harmful effects of child marriage and legal remedies provided by the government.

The focus would be on giving insights on why and how to prevent child marriage and how to reach out to the village, district and state administrations to report any wrongdoing or crisis.

The villagers would also be given information about the various helpline and help desk numbers to report such cases.

During these two weeks, different programmes will be implemented for children at the district level. There will be a review of the absence of children in schools. Educational documentaries will be shown to the students and various programmes will be organised for children, teenagers, women groups, etc.

The first phase of the campaign began on August 15. It was based on the 30th year of United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC30), launched a special campaign titled - ‘Celebrating Child Rights’, which would focus on issues related to children’s rights.
