MSBTE to conduct edu survey to tweak enrolment in polytechnics

Pune: With yet another year wherein the admissions to polytechnic colleges have seen a dip by 60 per cent, Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education (MSBTE) will take up an initiative to conduct an extensive 15-day educational survey along with Pricewater Coopers (PWC) firm starting from September 14 to October 1. MSBTE stated that around 70,000 seats (40 per cent) were filled in polytechnic colleges across the State this year.

Hence to improve the enrolment ratio, MSBTE has taken the initiative. The survey will be conducted to find out the reasons behind the dip and analyse whether the syllabus of all courses under polytechnic are outdated or require to be inclusive of industrial needs.

Once the educational survey is completed, MSBTE will formulate an action plan and make a five-year perspective plan from academic year 2019-20 to 2023-24.

MSBTE will also conduct a few sensitisation workshops with management representatives, principals of technical diploma colleges and industrial representatives in six regions. The first workshop was recently held at DY Patil Sankul, Akurdi in Pune region, while other will be held in regions like Nashik, Aurangabad, Amravati, Nagpur and Mumbai.

The board has created six groups, for example, Std IX to X students group. These students will be asked their subject of interest for higher education, for Std XI to XII students, post Std XII students of vocational, industrial training and diploma students, whether they feel their academy will help seek job, for the students diploma passed students. There will be a group of those students who have taken direct admission from diploma course for second-year engineering degree course while the survey will also be conducted in technical institutes and industries.

The representatives of each college will reach at least 10 students and their parents to understand which branch do they want to pursue and 10 industries in their vicinity. MBSTE expects to reach over a lakh of people inclusive of 50,000 students and 50,000 parents, apart from this 400-500 industries will also be approached.

“So far, the institutes would work according to directions given by regulatory bodies or higher authorities. By conducting the survey, we are trying to involve institutes so that they can also find and analyse the reasons why there are few enrolments in the institutes. This will help them understand industrial needs and happenings in their area to inculcate necessary changes in the academics,” said VM Mohitkar, Director of MSBTE.
“Our intention is the upliftment of courses, better-structured syllabus inclusive of industrial requirements and to create awareness about diploma courses,” said Mohitkar.

According to an official from MSBTE, 90 per cent of diploma students shift to engineering degree courses in the second year and take direct admission in degree colleges. He cited the reason to be that students still feel degrees will get them jobs, however, the fact is different. Many industries are looking for diploma graduates instead of degree graduates.

Pune Region
Total available seats    41,961
Total enrolment    20,661

Maharashtra State
Total enrolment    65,983
The number of total seats is approximate 1.5 lakh, however, it may vary as 35 colleges have been shut by All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) this year.
