Molesters booked after assault video goes viral

Pune: Two persons have been booked by Pune city police for allegedly molesting and assaulting a girl on Ahmednagar road on Sunday night. The case was registered on Thursday after the video of the incident went viral on social media.

It took two days for 25 police personnel to get details of the persons seen in the video. The girl from Yerawada lodged a complaint against the two men, who are said to be from Wagholi and Jamkhed, and were on the run. Police said that the accused persons molested her after she refused to talk to them.

According to police, the incident took place at around 9 pm near Hotel Uppala on the highway. She was passing by when the three men saw her. She knew one of them, who is a friend. The other two were in an inebriated state and started using obscene words. She walked away. However, they followed her and had a heated argument, following which the accused molested her.

“We have registered an FIR against the two men, who are under 30 years old, for offences under sections 354D (stalking), 506 (criminal intimidation), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), etc, of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). I cannot divulge a lot of details,” said Senior Police Inspector Rajendra Mulik, in-charge of Chandan Nagar police station.

When asked about the delay in filling the case, the officer added that initially the complainant did not approach them.

“After the video went viral, we investigated the case suo motu and traced the girl, as well as the man who is seen helping her. Later, we asked her to lodge a complaint and based on that, an FIR was registered on Thursday,” Inspector Mulik added.

Officials said that two teams, under the guidance of DCP Deepak Sakore, were deployed to nab the suspects, who were caught and detained.
