Moderate rainfall for city

PUNE: Puneites finally got some respite from the incessant rain on Tuesday as the city reported light rainfall and sunlight in the afternoon. However, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for August 7 and August 8 for central Maharashtra, especially in the ghat areas, Konkan and Goa and Vidarbha.

Speaking to Sakal Times, Anupam Kashyapi, Head of Weather at IMD Pune, said both Arabian seaside and the Bay of Bengal side branches of the monsoon are getting stronger. “So, good rains are expected.

“There are packed isobars on the Arabian seaside and strong westerlies are ensuring that ample amount of moisture is brought to the State, which is causing Statewide rainfall. As on Tuesday evening, there was a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal, which became a depression, which may develop into a deep depression till August 7 evening. These two sides are getting stronger, which will translate into good rainfall till August 9,” said Kashyapi.

Kashyapi added that the IMD has continued to issue a red alert for the ghat areas in central Maharashtra, Konkan, Goa and Vidarbha till August 9. “Palghar, Mumbai, Thane and Raigad districts are expected to get very heavy rains till August 8. From August 9, there is a heavy rain warning for northern Konkan, Goa and northern central Maharashtra. Pune will also receive moderate rains,” said Kashyapi.

According to IMD, Maharashtra now has 29 per cent excess rainfall. At present, central Maharashtra has received at 64 per cent excess rain from June 1 to August 6 followed by Konkan and Goa at 48 per cent. Marathwada has 18 per cent rain deficiency followed by six per cent deficiency in Vidarbha for the same period. For the country, between June 1 and August 6, east and northeast region has 14 per cent rain deficiency, whereas northwest India has 10 per cent rain deficiency.
