Mixed reactions to Rajasthan verdict

Pune: General resentment against Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje benefited Congress at large in Rajasthan Assembly elections, said people from Rajasthan living in Pune.

Results of five assembly elections including Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Mizoram and Telangana were declared on Tuesday. City-based Rajasthanis, who travelled to their native places to cast their votes, reacted to the poll results.

Umesh Chaudhary, President, BJP Traders’ Association, said Rajasthan traditionally votes either for BJP or Congress. This time, Congress benefited due to general resentment against Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje. Although the Central government has initiated a number of good schemes, a delay in launching them in Rajasthan took the toll. Had under progress development projects finished earlier, the picture would have been different.

He added the city traders have fully supported BJP. The results from Pali district constituencies speak for it. He suggested that Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore is capable of leading BJP in Rajasthan and can pose a challenge to Congress leader Sachin Pilot. Members of BJP Traders’ Association will be travelling again for the Lok Sabha elections in April- May 2019.

Modaram Devasi, President of Devasi Samaj, pointed out the contribution of Devasi (Dhangar) to the victory of BJP in Pali district. He cited two reasons for BJP’s defeat, CM Raje was active only in the past six months and faulty candidate selections, leading to rebellion, which caused substantial damage. Devasi said Om Prakash Mathur or Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore should lead the party in the future.

Congress supporter Dharmavat Chaudhary said the party secured over 100 seats as he had predicted.
He added that the BJP leaders ignored the demand for desilting of village ‘talab’ (lakes) despite repeated requests. The lakes did not fill properly during the rainy season and affected the villagers and their cattle severely during the drought.

He added that the BJP also did not fulfil promises like road widening and supply of drinking water. The villagers resented that forget Rs 15 lakh, even Rs 1,500 was not credited in their bank accounts.

He said the decision of selecting the chief minister lies with the party high command. However, personally, he would prefer Ashok Gehlot being a seasoned and experienced leader, who mixes comfortably with all, unlike Raje who is arrogant. Gehlot can communicate in Marwari. Hence, locals identify and connect with him readily, unlike Pilot who speaks in Hindi.

Dharmavat said the winds of change have begun to flow and will blow BJP away in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
