Ministers Patil, Athawale face flood-affected people’s outrage

PUNE: The flood-affected people on Friday protested in Aranyeshwar area alleging apathy by the civic and district administrations and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders. District Guardian Minister Chandrakant Patil and Republican Party of India (RPI) leader and Union Minister Ramdas Athawale had to face people’s anger.

Earlier, District Collector Naval Kishor Ram visited the flood-affected areas. However, people criticised the district administration for not providing help in time. They also questioned the timing of his visit saying why the district administration was visiting after two days of the disaster. An agitation was also held in Sahakar Nagar.

Later, Patil met the affected people and faced their ire. They also questioned the timing of his delayed visit. No local representative or BJP leader was present when the residents needed help during and immediately after the disaster. The anger among people was so high that Patil had to be taken away amid police protection as BJP workers threw a protective ring around him.

When contacted, Patil said he met ‘genuine’ citizens and listened to their issues. He also suggested that the opposition parties should not politicise the issue.

Later, RPI President Ramdas Athawale also faced people’s anger when he visited the affected areas in the evening. Shiv Sena leader Neelam Gorhe also visited the affected areas.
