Pune: ““This honour is not mine, its an honour of my dear country. I was only representing India and its people as the head of state. This is the felicitation of our friendship of two countries,” said former president of India Pratibha Patil, as she received the prestigious Mexican National Award ‘Orden Mexicana de Aguila Azteca’ on Saturday. This honour was presented by Melba Pria, Mexican Ambassador to India.

It is the highest distinction that Mexico awards to foreign nationals for their prominent services to the Mexican nation or to humanity for their contribution in strengthening the bilateral relation between Mexico and other countries. In 2007, the then Mexican president He Felipe de Jesus Calderon Hinojosa had paid a visit to India and invited Patil, who visited Mexico in 2008. This visit had elevated the relationship between the two countries.

““It is an humbling honour for me to give this award to Mrs Patil. After her visit, the relationship between the two countries elevated and Mexico became the first FDI recipient and first trading partner for India from Latin American countries,”” said Melba Pria, Mexican Ambassador to India.

A film of Patil depicting her life journey was also screened during the event.
