Metro work delayed due to rains

PUNE: The MahaMetro officials on Friday said that post-monsoon rains has led to delays in the metro project, which might impact the deadline of the 12 km priority stretch. MahaMetro had planned to complete the priority stretch from Vanaaz-Ramwadi and Nigdi-Swargate corridor before January.

However, Mahametro officials said that they have completed around 70 per cent work of the priority stretch till date and are targeting to complete 100 per cent of the civil work by December-end.

Speaking on the progress of the metro work, Chief Project Manager of MahaMetro Gautam Birhade said, “Rains have certainly impacted our project schedule. Mobilisation process has also been hampered leading to the delay and we are finding ways to accelerate the progress. We are positive that we will complete the civil work of the priority stretch by December and will try to schedule the trial runs by January.”

Speaking on the progress of underground metro work from Shivajinagar to Swargate, MahaMetro Director Atul Gadgil said that the first tunnel boring machine (TBM) is expected to reach Pune by Monday and the second tunnel boring machine has already been shipped from China and is expected to reach Mumbai in a few days.

“We are all set to configure the first tunnel boring machine, which will take about 15 days, after which we will start tunnelling work from Agriculture College towards Budhwar Peth. Each TBM will excavate about 6-7 mt per day. The crossover section of the tunnel is planned near Civil court and Swargate station.” added Gadgil.

Apart from Mandai underground station, MahaMetro has started the work of all underground stations including Shivajinagar, Civil court, Budhwar Peth and Swargate.

Gadgil also said that as HCC company was causing a delay in metro stations’ work, about 8 metro stations will be built by the Shapoorji Pallonji Group.
