Mercury dips to 8.2 degrees Celsius

PUNE: Eventually, Puneites felt the cold on Friday night when the city recorded the lowest night temperature of 8.2 degrees Celsius for the first time this winter season. Cold winds throughout Thursday and Friday kept the city temperature low.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cold wave conditions across Central Maharashtra will continue till Sunday.

On Friday, the maximum temperature in the city was recorded at 27.8 degrees Celsius.

Speaking to Sakal Times, Anupam Kashyapi, Head of Weather at IMD Pune said that after January 19, there will be a little rise in the temperature.

“Post January 21, there may be again a drop in temperature,” he said, adding that the city had witnessed a drop in temperature as low as 4 degrees Celsius in February in the past years. For example, on February 9, 2012 the temperature was reported at 4.6 degrees Celsius and on February 8, 2019 the temperature was reported to be 5.1 degrees Celsius. Hence there is still hope that temperature may reduce further in the coming month,” said Kashyapi.

He said the drop in temperature was due to the colder northern winds coming to the southern peninsula.

“The colder winds are here so the temperature has dropped. The IMD has forecasted that the cold wave situations at isolated places are likely in Central Maharashtra for January 18,” said Kashyapi.

On Friday, the lowest minimum temperature reported across the State was at Nashik at 6 degrees Celsius.
