Meet in city to discuss NRC

PUNE: Opposing the National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise and amendment of the Citizenship Act, NRC Virodhi Sangharsh Samiti has organised a conference on NRC at Nilu Phule Hall of Rashtriya Seva Dal on November 26.

The committee (samiti) initiated by Rashtriya Seva Dal comprises like-minded members from different secular, democratic, progressive organisations.

While the exercise of NRC has got over in Assam early this year, the Central government has been intending to take it across the country.

“Out of the 19 lakh people, around 12 lakh were non-Muslim citizens who didn’t have citizenship. The ruling government then said that they will allow all communities including Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Parsis to stay back in the country which means Muslim community will be largely targeted,” said social activist Razia Patel.

Rashtriya Seva Dal member Vilas Kirote said, “We understand NRC was necessary for Assam as between 1969-71, a large number of people migrated from Bangladesh and most of them settled in Assam. It created a burden on the state government. However, conducting NRC across the country was unnecessary.”

“Many have been citizens of the country for several decades and have participated in elections, acquired ration card, voter ID, PAN card. Many may have served in the government offices too,” added Kirote.

Patel also said that the committee will raise awareness about NRC at the grassroot level. Further, it will also take the initiative to voice its opinion in Parliament sessions to oppose the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB).
