MCCIA launches electric mobility diploma

PUNE: The Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA), in a joint initiative with College of Engineering, Pune (CoEP), Cummins College and Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) launched a one-year full-time course on ‘electric mobility’ on Thursday.

The course will cover most aspects of electric mobility including energy storage system, design and architecture, IoT (Internet of Things) and sensors, applied math and other fundamentals.

The course was announced at a press meet at the MCCIA Tower on Senapati Bapat Road.

At the meet, Kinetic Engineering Chairman Arun Firodia said Pune should take the lead in designing innovative solutions in electric mobility which could be exported.

“Some benefits of electric vehicles include environmental as they do not cause pollution and we do not have to rely on oil imports. More solar power can be used to generate electricity to be used in electric vehicles. It will also generate employment,” Firodia said.

On the future of gas pumping stations following rise in use of electric vehicles, Firodia said the pumping stations can get into the business of battery swapping and battery charging.

“I am aware that people are worried about reaching their destination in the available battery power and this is where pumping stations can act like charging stations. For long distances, people will have to carry CNG and use fuel cells to run their electric vehicle,” added Firodia who has asked the MCCIA and academicians to involve Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI).

Currently, there are 60 seats for the course which will be distributed equally at the three institutes. An admission panel will guide the applicants in  selection of the institutes. The course, titled ‘Postgraduate diploma in Electric Mobility’, will be a trimester one and each semester would be 16 weeks long with last semester as industrial training.

During the press conference, SPPU Vice-Chancellor Nitin Karmalkar said it was a great moment to launch the course wherein, academia, industry and MCCIA are coming on the same platform.

The course will be start from August 19 at a fee of Rs 1.5 lakh per student.

MCCIA President Pradeep Bhargava, MCCIA past president and Sakal Media Group Chairman Pratap Pawar, MCCIA Director General Prashant Girbane, CoEP Director BB Ahuja, Cummins Engineering College Principal Madhuri Khambete, SPPU Dean of Faculty of Technology Aditya Abhyankar and Rajendra Jog of Cummins Engineering College were present.
