Mayor To Select 5 Spots For Pay-And-Park

PUNE: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has a tough task of selecting just five spots for the Pay-and-Park scheme from a list of 31 locations in the city.

At a meeting held on November 2, the Pune Municipal Corporation administration submitted a list of 31 places in their proposal to Mayor Mukta Tilak asking her to decide on any five places for the scheme, which has to start soon on a pilot basis.

The PMC had proposed a parking policy in March 2018 in their General Body meeting, as charging money for parking would reduce the number of parked vehicles and help improve traffic scenario of the city.
However, citizens criticised the scheme for the high parking charges.

Additional Municipal Commissioner Rubal Agarwal said, “People park their vehicles in no-parking zones due to inadequate parking places available in the city. This move will provide adequate space on roads to citizens to park their vehicles.

“After the final call by the ruling party, we will implement the scheme as soon as possible,” said Agarwal.

BJP had sought more time from the civic administration to discuss the proposal in March 2018 with an expert committee.

However, due to the general elections and Assembly elections, the entire pay-and-park plan was put on hold by the PMC.

As soon the Assembly election results were announced, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) pay-and-park initiative seems to be back on track.

Mayor Mukta Tilak said, “The list we received from the civic administration will be discussed. Then we will take a final call.”
