Maulana sentenced to 1-year imprisonment

Pune: The judicial magistrate court, Pune Cantonment, on Thursday, sentenced a Maulana (Muslim priest), who was teaching in a madrasa, to one year rigorous imprisonment for stalking a woman and her daughter in 2016.

Joint Judicial Magistrate (First Class) AS Deshpande also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the convict Mohammad Mansur Chandulal Inamdar (38), a resident of Kondhwa.

As per the FIR registered with Wanowrie police station, the incident took place on October 5, 2016. The woman and her daughter had gone to purchase cosmetics in Shukrawar Peth. The convict had followed them from Shukrawar Peth to their shop in Fatiman Nagar. At that time, Inamdar used to teach at a madrasa in Nana Peth. On the next day also, he kept a watch from outside their shop following which the complaint was lodged.

Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) Amrapali Kasture and JS Waghmare examined five witnesses to prove the guilt of the accused person. The case was investigated by police officer Rekha Kale, while advocates Hafizuddin Kazi and Saifan Shaikh assisted the APP.

Defence lawyer MM Sayyed argued to give the benefit of doubt to the accused, as there was no concrete evidence against him.

While convicting the Maulana, the judge stated, “Modesty is the ornament of a woman and no person has any right to follow her without any reason and more particularly when there is a clear indication of disinterest shown by such a woman. Moreover, the conduct of the accused does not warrant any leniency in his favour. If such types of acts were protected by giving benefit of Probation of Offenders Act, then wrong message will go in the society and similar type of offences will be committed by accused, which is harmful for women in society and there will be no respect for the judicial system among common people.

Hence, he is not entitled for being shown any leniency.”
