Man loses life after saving 15 lives

Pune: While saving some 15 lives, 25-year-old Dharmanath Kumar lost his life on the catastrophic Wednesday night when the southern part of the city witnessed flashed floods. His body was found near Lullanagar area on Thursday morning.

Dharmanath hailed from a village in Uttar Pradesh. He was survived by his wife Pramiladevi, two sons Raj and Mansu and a brother. The family shifted to Pune two years ago and were residing at Ambedkarnagar slums. Dharmanath was a daily wage labourer.

It happened so that the family had just finished their dinner when the 25-year-old heard people shouting outside the house at around 9.20 pm. He saw water flowing through a window of a flat opposite to his house. Realising the flood-like situation, he, along with his brother Goluprasad Kumar immediately rushed to rescue people who were stuck in the flood. The brothers with the help of five other youths managed to rescue 15 citizens.

While they were heading back towards their houses, Dharmanath and his brother noticed that water started flowing into his house and four adjacent houses.

Dharmanath rescued his wife and children with the help of a rope, while Goluprasad helped them come out of the house.

During this process, a strong water current gushed into his house and Dharmanath hurriedly tried to rush towards the house’s exit door. However, the strong current washed him away. The look out for Dharmanath was conducted throughout the night and his body was found around 4 km away from his house at 11.30 am near Ganga Satellite and Raheja Garden Society in Lullanagar area.
